Can Type 2 Diabetes Be Cured?

The days just before Christmas we met Yvonne, one of many people who have taken matters into their own hands and managed to cure their type 2 diabetes (hang in for the entire conversation here). It was a fantastic meeting. So inspiring and hopeful but at the same time so sad and frustrating. Frustrating because the dietary advice (which consist of foods known to have a major impact on blood sugar) Yvonne received from her healthcare provider only exacerbated her illness.

Why had no one during Yvonne’s 15 years of medical assistance talked about the fact that there are actually people who have changed their diet and become completely symptom-free (or as Yvonne puts it, cured themselves of a deadly disease)? But, as someone quickly pointed out when we recently released our interview with Yvonne: Type 2 Diabetes Can’t Be Cured?! Our reply was: Well, it depends on who you ask.

According to healthcare today, type 2 diabetes is a disease that cannot be cured. This is because people who suffer from type 2 diabetes are treated with medication when they seek care. And the medications available today cannot cure the disease, they just keep it in check. Type 2 diabetes has therefore been classified as a chronic disease (i.e., a disease that cannot be cured). Sad, since the average age of type 2 diabetics is getting lower and patients are sentenced to a long life on medication as well as an increased risk of many serious complications, but also other serious diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, dementia, osteoarthritis. It is especially sad that all too many of the patients are unaware that there is research showing that type 2 diabetes can be prevented and reversed with the help of dietary changes.

Type 2 diabetes is one of the fastest growing and most costly illnesses today, leading to a lowered quality of life for many. The upwards trend of the type 2 diabetes epidemic is shared by all western countries. The costs associated with the disease create a great burden on the healthcare systems. This seems like an unnecessary absurdity considering that it can be prevented, thus preventing the costs of lifetime medical attention incurred by type 2 diabetics. Could prevention by way of a prescription that contains, not pills, but the right foods really be the cure to our healthcare budget woes and the gloomy fate of the masses who are set on track to receive a type 2 diabetes diagnosis?  Yes! Or as Dr. Mark Hyman puts it, “Food isn’t like medicine, it is medicine, and it’s our number one tool for creating the vibrant health we deserve”.  A win-win situation, the thought of which makes our minds wander away into a time when fewer people would get sick, suffer and die prematurely or unnecessarily, where healthcare would be given more resources to obtain and sustain the level of care we all want – world-class healthcare could be a reality.

This is where Yvonne’s story is so inspiring and gives so much hope. Even if politicians and healthcare professionals haven’t yet succeeded in a reform that makes prevention the norm, we as individuals have the power to make changes today in our own lives. Knowledge is the key to change, the more people who realize they aren’t powerless the more we can create the change from the bottom up. Messages like this one need to be spread.

If you have type 2 diabetes yourself or know someone who has it, we recommend reading this article from Dr. Chatterjee (he has been on our podcast previously and is the author of several bestselling health books!) to get started. And if you believe you may be at risk, do not hesitate to go to your GP and ask for a simple blood test.
