BBQ Tofu Ribs

Today, there are a multitude of studies that show a positive relationship between a varied intake of vegetables and good health, this is in part due to the clever way different nutrients in vegetables reinforce each other.

The bottom line is that we should vary more often and fill up our plates with lots of colorful vegetables. For those of us who are trying to incorporate more of these veggies into our diet, sometimes the jump from traditional to nutrient hunter style feels more like a gaping hole than a jump.

Finding ways to remake your favorite classics can help to shrink that gaping hole back down to a hop skip and jump. And savoriness is the key to that feeling of deep satisfaction. BBQ ribs are definitely in the category of savory and to the surprise of many there is a delectable plant-based twist that is definitely worth giving a try. Check out the recipe below to give it a go.

BBQ Tofu Ribs
(servings: 4)

500 grams of tofu

BBQ sauce:
4 tsp honey
2 tsp sambal oelek
1 tbsp tomato puree
1 tbsp tamari
1 teaspoon sesame oil
1 teaspoon fresh ginger
salt and pepper
2 garlic cloves

Set the oven to 175C/350F. Cut the tofu into thick sticks and let them dry on a kitchen towel or a piece of paper towel. While waiting, stir together all the ingredients for the BBQ sauce in a saucepan and bring to a simmer over medium heat, add a tablespoon or two of water if it reduces too much and feels to thick.

Place the tofu sticks on a lined baking tray and brush generously with the BBQ. Bake in the middle of the oven for 10-15 minutes.
