Stay Off Milk to Prevent Acne

Like most teenagers, we were obsessed with our skin and trying to avoid pimples. We were always trying new moisturizers and foundations, and whether or not to pop a pimple was always serious business. Already back then (stone age if you ask our kids, yesterday if you ask us), some scientists talked about a possible connection between milk consumption and acne. But we didn’t listen. It seemed such a long shot and a much better idea to invest in expensive skincare products.

Now, a hundred years later, we know that skipping the milk would have been a much better idea.

Even though some studies have been carried out on the relationship between milk consumption and risk of acne in the past, the results have always been conflicting. Therefore, scientists decided to collect data and perform a meta-analysis of observational studies designed to, once and for all, evaluate the relationship between milk and dairy products and acne development. The results showed that the teenagers who consumed the most milk had 161% increased risk of acne (yup, you heard it right), compared to those who consumed the least. No significant association between yogurt/cheese and acne development was observed.

And so, the tip of the week: skip the milk.
