Health Quiz: Are You Eating Enough Fruits and Vegetables?

Time for a health quiz. What are the biggest risk factors for bad health and premature health?

a) smoking and high blood pressure
b) alcohol and high blood pressure
c) eating habits and high blood pressure

Don’t worry, we won’t keep you waiting. According to the United Nations World Health Organization’s report Global Burden of Disease (GBD), the correct answer is C. The report shows that, due to unhealthy eating, approximately 25 percent of swedish adults is at increased risk of chronic disease (cardiovascular disease, diabetes type 2, cancer) and premature death.

Research show that healthy eating habits and lots of fruits and vegetables can reduce the risk of lifestyle related diseases. If we stick to the recommendations given by the National Health Administration, a daily intake of 500 grams of fruits and veggies, we’re off to a good start. But how many of us manage to meet the recommendations outlined in the Dietary Guidelines?

a) 100%
b) 50%
c) 20%

Unfortunately, the answer is, once again, C. Only about one in five consumes a daily intake of 500 grams, which means that approximately 80% fails to meet the recommendations and therefore needs to increase the intake of fruits and vegetables. Every day.

We’re convinced that most people do care about their health. The problem is that the research findings don’t reach enough people. So, if you want to make a change, help us spread the word by forwarding this mini quiz to family and friends.
